Preparing for your X-ray
Most X-ray exams require little to no preparation. Here is what to know before you visit.
Is Any Preparation Needed?
In most cases, no. Most X-ray exams require little to no preparation. When you arrive, you may be asked to change into a gown, depending on the area being examined.
- Before your appointment
- Wear comfortable, two piece clothing without metal fasteners.
- Remove jewelry, piercings, and hair clips in the area being imaged.
- Bring your physician requisition.
What to expect
A medical radiation technologist (MRT) will position you for the exam. You will need to remain still, and may be asked to hold your breath briefly while each image is taken.
- During the exam
- The X-ray itself is painless and noncontact
- Most exams take 10 to 15 minutes total
- Your images are reviewed by a radiologist after the exam.

Please tell our team before your X-ray. Depending on the exam, additional precautions may be taken or your physician may recommend an alternative imaging method.

Billing & Coverage
Steroid injections
The steroid medication is provided at no cost to patients. Most procedure visits are billed to Alberta Health.
Hyaluronic acid and PRP
May be billed to private insurance, employer benefits, or paid out of pocket. Please call us before your visit so we can confirm what to expect.
Out-of-province patients
Coverage and billing vary by province. Please call us before your visit if you have questions about billing.
